Release readiness checklist

A release decision is only as good as the evidence behind it. This checklist gathers that evidence in one place, so the go or no-go call is made on facts, by a named owner, before release day.

The template

Release readiness: <release name and version>
Release owner: <name> Decision due: <date and time>

Scope
[ ] Every story in the release is accepted by the product owner
[ ] Anything deferred is listed, with the reason

Quality
[ ] Every requirement in the release has passing tests
[ ] Open defects are listed by severity, each with a decision
[ ] Regression tests have run on the release build

Security and compliance
[ ] Security scans have run, with no unresolved high-severity findings
[ ] Changes to personal data or access have been reviewed

Operations
[ ] Monitoring and alerts cover the changes
[ ] A rollback plan exists and has been tested
[ ] The runbook is updated and on-call people are briefed

Communication
[ ] Release notes are written
[ ] Support and customer teams are briefed
[ ] Customers are told about anything that affects them

Decision
[ ] Evidence linked for every item above
[ ] Go or no-go recorded, by the release owner, with the date

How to use it

  • Decide who decides. One named release owner makes the call, and the record says who.
  • Link evidence, do not tick from memory. Each item should point to a test run, a scan or a sign-off.
  • Agree the evidence before the day. Arguing about what counts as ready on release day is how risky releases go out.
  • List what you are not shipping. A deferral with a reason is a decision; a silent one is a surprise.

Questions

What is release readiness?

Release readiness is the state where a release has the evidence to ship: its scope is accepted, its tests pass, its risks are known and decided, operations are prepared, and a named owner has made the go or no-go call on that evidence.

Who makes the go or no-go decision?

One named release owner, often a release manager or product owner, decides on the evidence the team has gathered. Others advise, but a single accountable owner keeps the decision clear and on record.
